การอนุรักษ์สถาปัตยกรรมล้านนาโบราณในเชียงใหม่ - เรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์ (งานซ่อมแซมชานด้านหน้าเรือน)
เรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์หลังนี้ ถือเป็นตัวอย่างเรือนกาแลในยุค 120 กว่าปีได้ เพราะว่าตัวอย่างที่หลงเหลืออยู่ในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ มีเพียงไม่กี่หลังเท่านั้นที่มีความสมบูรณ์ ลักษณะพิเศษของเรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์อีกอย่างหนึ่งซึ่งมีความพิเศษคือ มีเทคนิคการเข้าไม้แบบลิ่ม แบบเดือยซึ่งเป็นการเข้าไม้แบบเรือนโบราณ และในพิพิธภัณฑ์เรือนโบราณล้านนา ก็จะมีเรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์นี้ที่แสดงให้เห็นการเข้าเสา เข้าโครงสร้างไม้ต่างๆ จะใช้วิธีการแบบโบราณในการสร้างเรือนหลังนี้
สำหรับโครงล่างที่มีปัญหามากที่สุด มีความผุพังแตกหักมากที่สุด ก็จะเป็นในส่วนของงานชาน ชานด้านหน้าเรือนซึ่งไม่มีหลังคาปกคลุม เวลาโดนแดด โดนฝน ก็จะเกิดผลมาก มีส่วนกระทบไปถึงตงที่อยู่ด้านล่างที่รองรับไม้แป้นชาน รวมไปถึงเสาด้านล้างทั้งหมดบริเวณชานนี้ ซึ่งโดนฝนมาเหมือนกัน ระยะเวลาหลายปีผ่านไปจึงทำให้ทรุดโทรมเป็นจำนวนมาก เลยต้องทำการเปลี่ยนยกแผงตั้งแต่งานเสาขึ้นมา งานตง ซึ่งต้องรองรบแผ่นแป้นไม้ เพราะว่าหากแป้นไม้แข็งแรงก็จริง แต่งานตงรองรับไม่แข็งแรง เวลาตอกตะปูเข้าไปบนแป้นไม้ก็จะทำให้ตงแตก ไม่มีความทนทานในอนาคต เพราะฉะนั้นจึงต้องทำการเปลี่ยนยกแผงทั้งหมด เพื่อรองรับการใช้งาน การเข้าชมในอนาคต และอยู่ไปได้อีกหลายปี
ในส่วนของการปรับปรุงซ่อมแซมชาน ชานหน้าเรือน เดิมทีเสาที่กำหนดในรูปแบบรายการ มีการกำหนดให้เปลี่ยนประมาณ 12 ต้น แต่พอทำการรื้อ พบว่าไม้ที่รื้อเกิดความผุพังจนไม่สามารถใช้งานได้แล้ว จึงทำการเปลี่ยนใหม่ทั้งหมดเลย
ตอม่อเดิม มีในส่วนของหูกระต่ายที่หลุดหมดเลย ก็ทำการรื้อใหม่ทั้งหมดเลย โดยทำการทุบและเสริมเข้ามาใหม่ เริ่มแรกทำตอม่อขึ้นมาก่อนเพื่อรองรับ โดยขุดดินลึกลงไปประมาณ 90 เซนติเมตร ในส่วนของตอม่อ จะใช้วิธีการหล่อในที่ตั้งเลย ใส่หูกระต่ายเข้าไปเพื่อยึดให้แน่น และใช้เหล็กข้ออ้อยเสริมซึ่งมีความแข็งแรงอย่างแน่นอน
ตอม่อ เป็นตอม่อขนาด 20 x 20 เซนติเมตร เป็นตอม่อกลม ลักษณะของเสาตอม่อสูงจากดินขึ้นมา 60 เซนติเมตร
เสามีลักษณะเป็นเสากลม ไม้เนื้อแข็ง หน้า 20 เซนติเมตร ในส่วนของตัวเสาที่มาวางบนตอม่อ จะต้องใช้หูกระต่ายเข้าไปประกบ โดยใช้สิ่วเซาะร่องบาก และใช้สว่านเจาะรู ในส่วนของตอม่อเก่าที่มีหูกระต่ายเดิมบางส่วน ก็ตัดหูกระต่ายเดิมที่ชำรุดแล้ว และนำหูกระต่ายใหม่ประกบและเชื่อมต่อกับหูกระต่ายเก่า โดยเครื่องเชื่อมไฟฟ้าซึ่งจะทำให้ได้ความแข็งแรงขึ้นมา
ตอม่อแล้วเสร็จก็ทำการติดตั้งเสา หลักจากนั้นก็ทำการยึดหูกระต่ายให้แน่น ในส่วนของเสาและร้อยน๊อตหูกระต่าย ตัวของเสา เสาบริเวณด้านนอกจะขนาดสูง 2.50 เมตร เพื่อรองรับส่วนของไม้ม้านั่งด้านบน ส่วนเสาด้านในต้นอื่นจะมีขนาดสูง 1.50 เมตร เพื่อรองรับคาน ตง พื้น ของชาน
จากนั้นต้องทำการหาระดับ บากเสาที่รับคาน โดยวีธีการบากจะใช้ทั้งมุย (ค้อน) และเลื่อย โดยใช้ทั้งเครื่องมือทั้งแบบเก่าและใหม่ผสมกัน เสร็จแล้วก็ทำการติดตั้งคาน ติดตั้งตงซึ่งวางบนคาน แล้วก็ค่อยติดตั้งพื้น
การติดตั้งพื้นชาน ก็จะใช้ไม้เนื้อแข็งหน้าสาม ตอกตะปูลง และเว้นร่องระหว่างไม้ประมาณ 1 – 1.5 เซนติเมตร เพื่อเป็นการระบายน้ำลงเวลาฝนตก ไม่ให้น้ำแข็ง มีร่องเพื่อให้น้ำไหล แล้วไม้ก็จะได้อยู่ไปยาวนาน
พื้นไม้ชานด้านหน้า เนื่องจากพื้นที่ยาวมาก ไม้ที่นำมาติดตั้งมีความยาวไม่พอ วิธีการติดตั้งที่เป็นช่วงรอยต่อระหว่างหัวไม้ กับหัวไม้ ก็จะทำการตัดต่อลักษณะการต่อไม้แบบปากฉลาม ลักษณะการตัดเฉียง เพื่อให้การเข้าไม่มีความสวยงาม
ลักษณะของชานหน้าจะมีม้านั่งอยู่ด้านบนด้วย ซึ่งจะต้องทำคานขึ้นมารับ และเสาที่นำมาติดตั้ง ก็ต้องเผื่อความสูงเพื่อมารับม้านั่งด้านบนด้วย ตัวม้านั่งรอบชานก็จะมีไม้ค้ำตัวไม้ม้านั่ง และรับในส่วนของคานด้วยเพื่อความแข็งแรง ไม่ทำให้โยกคลอน
ด้านหน้าก็จะประกอบไปด้วยบันไดทางขึ้นสู่ตัวชาน เพื่อเข้าเรือน ก็ทำการรื้อบันไดทั้งชุดเพื่อเปลี่ยนใหม่ เริ่มตั้งแต่แม่บันได ชุดบันไดด้านหน้าที่ทำขึ้นมาใหม่ แม่บันได เลือกเอาไม้มาซึ่งขนาดใหญ่ยิ่งกว่าแบบ ที่มีความแข็งแรงมาก ตัวไม้บันไดก็เป็นไม้เนื้อแข็งทั้งหมด ซึ่งเพิ่มความแข็งแรงของตัวบันไดอย่างแน่นหนา แล้วก็มั่นคงเป็นอย่างมาก
ราวบันได รวมไปถึงประตูทางขึ้นชานหน้าบ้าน ก็เปลี่ยนใหม่ทั้งหมด โดยใช้ไม้เนื้อแข็งทั้งหมด ซึ่งรูปแบบของตัวประตูเองก็เป็นแบบเดิมเลย ก็เป็นประตูในรูปแบบบานคู่ ก็ทำตามแบบของเรือนโบราณ ลักษณะคล้ายของเดิมเลย
ในส่วนของพื้นเรือน เดิมทีก็เป็นพื้นปูน เนื่องจากเกิดการทรุดตัวของตัวดิน เวลาฝนตกหรือน้ำไหลเข้ามาก็ทำให้มีน้ำขังอยู่ภายใน ก็เลยทำการเทพื้นใหม่ และทำเนินไว้ให้น้ำไหลออก และตัวพื้นที่ทำใหม่ก็สูงขึ้นมาประมาณ 10 เซนติเมตร เพื่อทำความสะอาดง่าย และไม่ทำให้น้ำขังอยู่ภายใน
และได้ทำการฉาบตอม่อให้สวยงามเรียบร้อย เข้ากับรูปทรงของเสาเรือน ท้ายที่สุดก็ส่วนของหูกระต่ายที่ทำการบากไว้จะเห็นส่วนของตัวเหล็กชัดเจน ก็ได้ทำการตัดไม้ประกบเข้าไปปิดเพื่อความสวยงาม ตามรูปแบบเรือนโบราณ
หลังจากที่ทำการปูไม้แป้นพื้นของชานทั้งหมดแล้ว รวมไปถึงงานเสา งานตง ก็จะทำการทาน้ำมันเคลือบ โดยการใช้ภูมิปัญญาของสล่า (ช่าง) ล้านนา ในอดีต ก็จะใช้น้ำมันขี้โล้ ซึ่งมีผลทำให้เป็นสารเคลือบไม้ ทำให้รักษาเนื้อไม้ด้านหน้า เพื่อเคลือบผิว เวลาโดนฝน โดนแดด ก็จะอดทนเพิ่มมากขึ้น
Restoration Work on Kalae Phayawong House (front sun porch)
The Kalae Phayawong House is an example of a kalae type house from more than 120 years ago. There are barely any of these houses left today that are in such good shape. Another special feature of the Kalae Phayawong House is that the wood is affixed with wooden pins and dowels, which is a traditional carpentry method. At the Lanna Traditional House Museum, the Kalae Phayawong House uses traditional carpentry methods in the construction process.
The lower structure of the house had a lot of problems because it was so decayed and damaged. The front porch doesn’t have a roof covering it, so it had weathered a lot or rain and sun. Even the joists and the support pillars underneath the floor had been continuously damaged by the rain for so many years. Everything had to be changed out and lifted up, from the pillars to the joists to the floorboards. If the floorboards were strong but the support structure was not, the joists would just fall apart when attaching the floorboards, and the floors wouldn’t be durable. The floor had to be lifted entirely to be able to support use by visitors for many years to come.
When repairing the front porch, the original plan was to replace 12 of the pillars. However, once the wood was dismantled, it was found that the damage made it impossible to use the old pillars, so they all had to be replaced.
The rabbit ears of the foundation post had totally fallen off, so it had to be dismantled. It was removed, and a new foundation post was placed into a hole dug about 90 cm into the ground. The foundation post was coated with oil, and rabbit ears were placed. Deformed steel bars were used to add strength to the foundation post.
The foundation post was 20 cm x 20 cm. It was round and came about 60 cm out of the ground.
The pillars are round, made of hard wood, and about 20 cm wide. The pillar placed on top of the foundation post is attached with rabbit ears. A gouge was used to create a cavity and a drill was used to drill the hole. The old foundation post still had rabbit ears attached to it, so the damaged parts were removed and replaced with new pieces, using an electric welder to ensure strength.
After the foundation post was finished, the pillar was installed, and the rabbit ears were firmly attached. The pillars around the outside are about 2.5 meters tall because they need to support the benches, while the inner pillars are 1.5 meters tall because they support the beams, joists, and porch floor.
Next, notches are made in the pillars at the correct height to support the porch. These notches are made with a mallet and a saw, both traditional and modern versions. Once that is finished, the porch is installed. First the joists are placed, and then the floor is laid. The floor is made of hardwood held in place with nails. About 1-1.5 cm is left between the planks to allow water to fall through when it rains. This prevents water from collecting on the porch, so it can last a long time.
Because the front porch is so long, the wood brought in to replace it wasn’t long enough. To connect wooden planks end-to-end, a method called “sharks mouth” was used. A slanted cut is used so that the connection is aesthetically pleasing.
The front porch also has a bench. The porch must support the bench, and the pillars must be long enough to reach the bench. The bench wraps around the porch and has wooden supports to make the bench and the porch stronger and more stable.
The front also has stairs that lead up to the porch to get into the house. The stairs were completely dismantled to be replaced. The stair base beam was replaced with an even bigger piece of wood. It needs to be strong wood. All of the wood that makes up the stairs will be hardwood, which will ensure the stairs are strong, durable, and stable.
The railing and the doorway into the stairs were also totally replaced with hardwood. The new door is the same as the old door with a double opening in the traditional style, the same as the original.
As for the house floor, the original floor was made of mortar. The earth beneath the floor had sunken, which caused water to be trapped underneath, so the floor had to be newly poured with a slope to allow the water to flow out. The new floor was also about 10 cm higher than the original in order to clean more easily and prevent the collection of water underneath.
The post was varnished so that it would match the pillar. Finally, the metal of the rabbit ears was exposed, so a small piece of wood was cut to close up the hole to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
After laying all the porch floorboards and finishing up the pillars and joists, oil was used to cover the wood in the traditional Lanna carpentry methods. In the past, used motor oil was used, which helped protect the wood surface with an extra layer that resisted the rainwater and sunlight.
