การอนุรักษ์สถาปัตยกรรมล้านนาโบราณในเชียงใหม่ - เรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์ (งานซ่อมแซมโครงบน)
เรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์เป็นเรือนกาแลรูปแบบหนึ่ง สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2440 อยู่ที่อำเภอป่าซางจังหวัดลำพูน เรือนหลังนี้เป็นของพญาวงศ์ ซึ่งมีตำแหน่งเป็นนายแคว่น (กำนัน) หลังจากที่อยู่ที่อำเภอป่าซาง ก็มีการโยกย้ายเรือนไปในที่ต่างๆ จนถึงครั้งที่ 3 ถูกย้ายมาที่พิพิธภัณฑ์เรือนโบราณล้านนา สำนักส่งเสริมศิลปวัฒนธรรม มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่แห่งนี้
พญาวงศ์มีตำแหน่งเป็นนายแคว่น เทียบเท่ากับกำนันในปัจจุบัน การเป็นนายแคว่นทำให้มีกำลังทรัพย์ มีกำลังคนในการสร้างเรือนขนาดใหญ่ได้ ตำแหน่งของนายแคว่น (กำนัน) ทำให้มีสิทธิ์ใช้ไม้ที่มีขนาดใหญ่ และหาวัสดุไม้ที่อย่างดีมาสร้างเรือนขนาดนี้ได้
สำหรับเรือนหลังนี้ เรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์ ซึ่งเป็นเรือนหลังสุดท้ายของการดำเนินงานในเฟสที่ 2 ในการปรับปรุงซ่อมแซมในโครงการ AFCP 2019 ที่ได้รับทุนจากสถานเอกอัครราชทูตสหรัฐอเมริกาประจำประเทศไทย เรือนหลังนี้จะมีการซ่อมแซมในส่วนของโครงบน จะเป็นในเรื่องของหลังคา
ส่วนของกระเบื้องหลังคาที่จะทำการเปลี่ยนนั้น เราได้ทำการเปลี่ยนจากด้านในออกมา เนื่องจากว่าตัวหลังคามีความชันมาก ไม่สามารถจะปีนขึ้นไปเปลี่ยนจากด้านนอกได้ เพราะว่าอาจเกิดความเสียหาย จึงได้ทำการเปลี่ยนจากด้านในเป็นบางส่วนที่เสียหายมาก โดยถอดแผ่นหลังคาที่เสียหายเอาออก แล้วค่อยๆ สอดในส่วนของกระเบื้องดินเผาใหม่เข้าไป เรียงทีละแผ่นๆ ซึ่งค่อนข้างใช้เวลามากและยาก ในตอนแกะก็จะมีหลังคาที่มันแตกเสียหายเพิ่ม
งานรางลิน เป็นงานที่สำคัญอย่างยิ่งของเรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์ เป็นงานในส่วนของโครงบนหรือโครงหลังคา ซึ่งรางลินมีสภาพที่ทรุดโทรมอย่างหนัก ก่อให้เกิดปัญหาน้ำรั่วลงมาสู่พื้น ทำให้พื้นเกิดปัญหาต่อเนื่องจากรางลินที่รั่ว จึงทำการเปลี่ยนแผ่นสังกะสีรองรางลิน และทำการซ่อมแซม
และที่สำคัญอีกอย่างคือรางลินประสบปัญหาการทรุดลงเนื่องจากรองรับน้ำหนักมาหลายปี และไม้รางลินทางด้านบนผุพังแตกหักรวมไปถึงผลกระทบจากหลังคาที่ทรุดลงมา ก็ต้องทำการเสริมและยกรางลินขึ้นไปให้อยู่ในระดับที่ถูกต้อง และจะทำให้สามารถใช้งานรองรับน้ำฝน และสิ่งอื่นๆ ที่จะตกลงสู่หลังคาเรือน
เปลี่ยนค้ำยัน ก็ได้ทำการเปลี่ยนทั้งสองด้าน เพื่อให้รางลินยกระดับขึ้น และช่วยเสริมน้ำหนักทั้งสองด้านให้ยกรางลินได้
ก็จะมีในส่วนของเปลี่ยนรางลินรับน้ำ โดยทำการรื้อใหม่ทั้งหมด ในส่วนของสังกะสี เดิมทีใช้สังกะสี แล้วก็ใส่ค้ำยัน ใส่ไม้รับรางลินเข้ามา วัสดุที่นำมาเปลี่ยนใหม่จะเป็นเมทัลชีท ซึ่งมีความแข็งแรง มีอายุการใช้งานที่ยาวนานขึ้น
ส่วนโครงบนของเรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์ตรงด้านหน้า จะมีหลังคาตรงด้านหน้าทั้งสองห้อง มีลักษณะทรุดลงเนื่องจากการรับน้ำหนักมาหลายปี และตัวหลังคามีน้ำหนักมาก จึงทำให้ทรุดและโน้มลงมาด้านหน้า
ไม้ค้ำยันด้านหน้า ระดับที่ทำคือการยกชายหน้า ซึ่งเดิมทีมันตกลงมา ได้ทำการยกชายหน้าให้ขึ้นไปเท่ากันทั้งสองหน้าก่อน เรือนโยก และตัวไม้เองก็ผุพังมากแล้ว จึงได้ทำการเปลี่ยนและทำการเสริมไม้ด้านหน้าเข้ามาอีก
อย่างที่บอกไปว่าด้านหน้าของเรือนกาแลพญาวงศ์ มีลักษณะที่ทรุดลง จึงได้ทำการเสริมค้ำยันดีดยกขึ้นมาให้อยู่ในระดับที่ถูกต้องแล้ว และเสริมค้ำยันเข้าไปให้ขึ้นตรง และในอนาคตก็จะไม่ได้หล่นลงมาอีก
ภายในที่ได้ทำการเปลี่ยนคือไม้คีบดั้ง ซึ่งมีสภาพที่ค่อนข้างผุมากแล้ว ก็ได้ทำการเปลี่ยนเป็นไม้เนื้อแข็ง เพื่อความแข็งแรง
ในการถอดตัวปั้นลม ต้องระมัดระวังเป็นอย่างยิ่ง เนื่องจากประกบกับตัวหางวรรณและตัวกาแลเดิม มีลักษณะที่เก่า สุ่มเสี่ยงต่อการพัง เพราะฉะนั้นต้องค่อยๆ แกะออกมา ซึ่งตอนระหว่างแกะก็จะมีกระเบื้องบางส่วนที่แตกออกมา ก็ได้ทำการซ่อมแซมภายหลัง
หลังจากนั้นก็เลือกไม้ ขนาดที่ใหญ่กว่าปั้นลมเดิม และนำมาบากให้มีลักษณะโค้ง ให้เข้ากับตัวเรือน และติดตั้งเข้าไป วิธีการติดตั้งก็นำไปประกบ และใช้ตะปูที่ต้องค่อยๆ ตอก เพราะจะไปกระทบกับส่วนของหลังคาที่อยู่ข้างๆ ที่ได้ติดตั้งไปแล้ว ตอกเสร็จ ติดตั้งปั้นลมเสร็จก็ทำการยาปูน (ฉาบปูน) ตามแนวขอบของปั้นลมให้เรียบร้อย กันน้ำไม่ให้เข้าไป
ที่ต้องใช้ปืนลมช่วย (เครื่องมือสมัยใหม่) เนื่องจากว่าพอยิงเข้าไปแล้วจะมีผลกระทบต่อส่วนอื่นข้างเคียงน้อยที่สุด ส่วนอื่นที่ใช้ตะปูได้ จะใช้ตะปูมากที่สุด เป็นการอนุรักษ์เรือนโบราณ และวิธีการทำงานแบบสล่าดั้งเดิมให้ได้มากที่สุด
Restoration work on Kalae Phayawong House (roof, gutter, gable, roof structure)
The Kalae Phayawong House is a kind of Kalae house which was built in 1897 (2440 B.E.). It was built in Pachang District, Lamphun Province. This house belonged to Phayawong, who was a sub-district headman. It was moved from Pachang District to different places, and it is now located at Chiang Mai University’s Lanna Traditional House Museum after 3 moves.
Phayawong’s title was ‘Nai Khwaen’, which would be the same as a sub-district headman today. This position gave him resources that allowed him to build such a big house, and also gave him the right to use large pieces of wood and find good quality wood for the house.
The Kalae Phayawong House is the last house in the second phase of the AFCP 2019 program restorations, which received funding from the United States Embassy in Thailand. This house received restorations on its roof.
The shingles were replaced from the inside because the roof is so steep, making it impossible to replace the shingles from the outside since it might cause damage. The damaged shingles were removed from the inside and replaced with new clay shingles. They were lined up shingle by shingle, which takes a long time and is rather difficult. And then when the shingles were removed, it revealed a roof that had even more damage.
The gutter is an important part of the Kalae Phayawong House. It’s part of the roof, and was seriously damaged, which allowed water to get into the house and reach the floors, causing further damage to the floor. The metal base of the gutter was replaced, and other repairs were done.
The gutter had been damaged from holding so much weight for many years, the upper wooden part of the gutter was decayed, and there was further damage due to the sunken roof. The gutter was brought up to its original height and made to be able to support the weight of rain and other things that fell onto the house.
Both sides of the gutter’s wooden supports were changed to lift the gutter up and help it support more weight.
The part that actually receives the water was totally dismantled. The metal base was replaced, and then wooden supports were added. The material used was sheet metal, which is strong and durable.
As for the upper structure of the front of the house, there is a roof in front of both rooms. Both roofs were sunken due to having supported so much weight for so many years. The heavy weight of the roof itself caused it to sink gradually over time.
The front wooden supports were changed to help lift the front eaves, which had sunken. The eaves were lifted up to the same height before moving the house. The wood had also decayed, so it was replaced. Because the front of the house was sunken in, wooden supports were added to bring the house back to its original height. The supports were reinforced so that they will not drop in the future.
On the inside, the king post grips had to be repaired because they had decayed. They were replaced with hardwood for strength.
Dismantling the gable requires great care because its age makes it prone to damage. It must be gradually taken apart, which can cause some of the shingles to break off. These were replaced afterwards. After dismantling the gable, a larger piece of wood was carved into a curve shape that fit with the house, and this piece was installed. It was held in place with nails, which had to be carefully hammered in so as not to damage other parts of the house. After it was installed, mortar was spread on the gable to prevent water from getting through.
An air gun (a modern tool) was used at some points because it didn’t damage the adjacent parts of the house when used. But whenever possible, the traditional hammering technique was used to conserve the traditional techniques of Lanna carpenters as much as possible.
